Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement in Atlanta, GA

Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide

Raynor cable and drum replacement in Atlanta typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we carry the right drums and cables for most Raynor torsion and extension systems on our trucks. Most jobs are finished in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem when the door hangs crooked, won’t lift evenly, or one cable has unspooled from the drum and the door is sitting cockeyed in the track.

Which Raynor Models This Applies To

This applies across Raynor’s residential line: the Admiral, General, and Pilot series, plus the older Raynor Relente and Distinction doors still common in Decatur and Sandy Springs homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. The critical match is drum lift type, not just door size. Raynor uses standard-lift drums on most 7-foot and 8-foot doors, but high-lift and vertical-lift drums have different cable groove spacing. Mix them up and your cables wear unevenly within months.

To identify yours: check the Raynor sticker on the interior panel for model and serial, then measure drum diameter at the widest cable groove. Most residential Raynor drums are 4-inch, but the older Relente line used a 3.75-inch drum that aftermarket suppliers often miss. We stock both OEM Raynor drums and DURA-LIFT equivalents rated for 10,000 cycles. For a door you plan to keep another decade, we generally recommend the OEM drum. For a door showing age in other components, a quality aftermarket drum with fresh cables is a square deal.

Mainspring Garage Door Co. of Atlanta is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Raynor.

Signs Your Raynor Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs lower on one side. A cracked or worn drum lets cable slip unevenly during opening. In Atlanta’s humidity, aluminum drums can oxidize at the hub and develop hairline cracks that you will not spot until the cable starts walking.
  • Cable is frayed or has broken strands near the bottom bracket. This is normal wear accelerated by misalignment. A failing drum grooves the cable at an angle, and the cable eats itself against the track edge every cycle.
  • Loud popping or grinding during the first foot of travel. The cable is not seating clean in the drum groove. On Raynor systems with torsion springs, this also stresses the spring and the center bearing plate.
  • The cable has completely come off the drum. Usually means the drum is worn enough that the cable flange no longer retains it, or the set screws have backed out. Do not run the opener. The door can drop hard and twist the track.
  • Rust-colored dust around the drum hub. In Atlanta, pollen and humidity pack into the drum grooves and hold moisture. We see this especially on north-facing doors in Buckhead and Virginia-Highland, where shade keeps the hardware damp.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range (Atlanta)
Cable & Drum Replacement (single) $130-$250
Cable & Drum Replacement (both sides) $220-$400
Additional torsion spring adjustment if needed No extra charge

The range depends on drum type (standard vs. high-lift), whether both sides need matching, and whether the bottom brackets or cable hardware also need replacement. We quote the price first. Then we start the work. That price includes parts, labor, lubrication of all moving points, and a full balance check. Every cable and drum replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it is not right, we come back.

Seniors and veterans receive a standing 5% discount. Repairs over $250 qualify for $50 off.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can inspect: look for fraying, check if cables seat evenly in the drum grooves, and confirm the door is unplugged before you touch anything. But cable and drum work on a torsion-spring door is not a homeowner job. The cables are under spring tension even when the door is down. A slipped wrench or miscounted winding can release that energy fast. We have seen bent tracks, broken fingers, and worse.

If you have an extension-spring Raynor and the cable has simply come off the pulley, that is safer to address. Still, extension springs carry their own risk if they are worn. We are glad to walk you through what you are looking at over the phone. When it is time to fix it, we will be there when we say. Call (855) 389-2471.
